Waste recycling centre, East Rand

This was an entire waste recycling centre — not a single building but the covered working area a sorting operation needs, erected at a waste facility on the East Rand.

Recycling halls ask for two things from a portal frame: uninterrupted floor area so front-end loaders and sorting lines can be laid out without designing around columns, and height at the tipping face. The portal frame gives you both, and it can be extended along the ridge later if the operation grows.
