Standard sizes and specification

Nine sizes we already hold designs for, and everything that comes as standard with them. Pricing is quoted per job — talk to us and we'll cost it against what you actually need.

Standard sizes

Nine sizes, already engineered.

Width is the clear span between columns. Height is measured to the eaves, not to the ridge. Every one of these is designed, drawn and ready to quote — which is why a standard size costs less and arrives sooner than a one-off.

Structures 2000 standard portal frame sizes: clear span width, length and eaves height in metres.

Included as standard

Everything you get as standard.

Roof sheeting
Galvanised IBR profile sheeting as standard, on a 10° roof pitch.
Fasteners
All fasteners included, down to the foundation bolts — nothing to source separately.
Design
Every structure is designed by a civil engineer. An engineer's drawing and certificate is supplied on request.
Fabrication
Manufactured in our own Spartan factory in Kempton Park, not subcontracted out.
Delivery & erection
We deliver and erect throughout South Africa using our in-house erection team, or supply delivery-only for export and owner-erected jobs.
Custom sizes
The nine sizes below are the sizes we hold designs for. We custom-manufacture any size to suit the site.

Options on top

Priced per job. Several of these change the frame design rather than just being bolted on afterwards, so they belong in the enquiry rather than in a change order.

Chromadek sheeting
Colour-coated roof and side cladding where appearance matters or a spec calls for it.
Bullnoses
Curved bullnose eaves detailing, common on retail and residential structures.
Translucent polycarbonate sheeting
Roof-light panels that cut daytime lighting load in warehouses and workshops.
Ventilators
Static or turbine ventilators to move heat out of workshops and packing sheds.
Roller shutter doors
Sized to your vehicle or plant access, fitted during erection.
Bubble foil roofing insulation
Reduces radiant heat gain and condensation under the sheeting.

Pricing

Every structure is quoted individually.

We don't publish a price list. Steel is a traded commodity, so the raw material moves week to week — and two buildings with the same floor area can differ enormously depending on span, eaves height, cladding, doors and site conditions.

Talk to us and we'll quote against what you actually need. Send the span, length and eaves height if you know them, or just describe what has to fit inside and we'll work the rest out with you.

Questions

Cost & lead time.

Plans, foundations and specification questions are answered in the full FAQ.

What does a steel structure cost per square metre in South Africa?

There is no single figure worth quoting. Steel is a traded commodity, so the raw material price moves constantly, and the cost per square metre of your building depends heavily on span, eaves height and how much cladding you specify — two buildings of identical floor area can differ enormously. That is why we quote per job rather than publish a price list. Send us the size and the intended use and we will cost it properly; the quote is free.

What makes one structure cost more than another the same size?

Span and height first — both add steel to every frame. Then cladding: an open structure is far cheaper than a fully clad and doored one. Then site conditions, since coastal and high-lying sites attract higher design wind loads. Then options — doors, insulation, ventilators, Chromadek. And finally whether we erect it or supply it delivery-only.

Is it cheaper to build in steel than in brick?

For large clear-span buildings, usually yes, and it is faster. A portal frame reaches a weatherproof shell in a fraction of the time masonry takes, needs no wet trades for the structure, and puts no loadbearing walls inside the floor area. For small buildings the gap narrows, and for anything where thermal mass matters the comparison is not really like for like.

How long will it take?

It depends on the size, on how busy the factory is, and on your plan approval and foundations — which are usually the real constraint, not fabrication. We give a realistic programme with the quote rather than quoting a standard lead time we might not hold to.

Span, length and eaves height — plus what it's for. If you don't know the numbers yet, describe the use and we'll work them out with you.
